programs and Funds

The SEF Board of Directors agree that to adequately impact the over-arching needs of the Valley, it must look for ways to address the root causes of concern. Examples of the programs supported by SEF are those that involve school and community engagement, poverty prevention programs and employment skills development initiatives.

Center for Safe Schools Fund

Helping keep students and school staff safe

Center for Safe Schools believes all students and staff deserve to attend a school that makes them feel safe and connected. When schools experience traumatic events such as sudden loss of a student or staff member, school shooting or natural disaster, there is an immediate need for relevant support to help them respond to the crisis and facilitate recovery. Your support enables Center for Safe Schools to provide  supportive training, tools and resources to schools and communities as they recover, rebuild and restore safety and security. As a result, your donation helps to increase resiliency and promote positive long-term recovery outcomes in Pennsylvania and across the nation.

Myrna B. Shure Learning Fund

Supporting the development of problem-solving skills in children so they can better navigate life

The Myrna B. Shure Learning Fund supports the development of cognitive, problem-solving, relationship, social awareness, and self-management skills of students in pre-K through 12 settings through programs such as the classroom I Can Problem Solve (ICPS) curriculum and parent and guardian training, Raise a Thinking Child (RaTC.) Research shows that children who participated in the ICPS program have better problem-solving skills, less impulsiveness and more positive social skills than their peers, which leads to higher scores on standardized tests. Donations assist schools and community-based organizations in implementing and continued sustainability of programs that support the development of resilient children and youth.

Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network (PSAYDN) Fund

Ensuring every youth in Pennsylvania benefits from the power of out-of-school time (OST) programs

According to the 2021 Pennsylvania Joint State Government Commission report, regular participation in high-quality afterschool programs can lead to an increase in positive behaviors, improved school attendance and test scores, and decrease in violence and crime, teen pregnancy, and health compromising behaviors including substance use. While quality afterschool programs help close the achievement gap, Pennsylvania faces major funding and access gaps. Data shows for every child participating in an afterschool program, there are four more children waiting for access to attend a program. Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network’s (PSAYDN) mission is to reverse this statistic by promoting sustainable, high-quality youth development programs through advocacy and capacity building, providing a pathway for children and youth to succeed in life.

By making a donation to PSAYDN, you can help us expand access to out-of-school (OST) programming, provide vital resources to all communities, build advocacy efforts, award scholarships and foster a lifelong love of learning in children, youth, and families.

Pennsylvania Parents as Teachers (PAT) Support Fund

Laying a foundation for strong families with healthy children, ready to learn

Parenting can be joyful, but it is not easy. Parents as Teachers (PAT) programs provide parents with knowledge and resources to prepare their children for a strong start in life. As part of the PAT evidence-based home visiting model, families set goals based on strengths-based family assessments and conversations with family members that bring focus to family health and stability. More than a dozen studies demonstrate that the benefits of PAT programs include early detection of children’s developmental delays and health problems, the achievement gap being narrowed, parents being more involved in their child’s schooling, and prevention of child abuse and neglect.

Your donation provides:

  • Supplies to meet essential needs, including personal care products, books and other consumables.

  • Professional learning scholarships to local Pennsylvania PAT programs to build expertise, strengthen services, advocate for equity in communities, and stimulate family leadership.
